An important notice to those regulars on this website.
In the nature of a disclaimer: a website named "vinlandsagas.com" has appeared on the web and this is to notify readers that "vinlandsagas.com" has no connection whatsoever to this website, "vinlandsite.com." Note the small difference, vis. "ite"/"agas" in the names at the end of the initial word. Search engines might well pick up one or another by error. Persons using this "vinlandsite.com" should remain alert to odd pages that do not seem to fit the theme and subject of "vinlandsite.com" which is solely devoted to a particular historical episode and contains no advertising, popups, or distracting material.
Investigation of "vinlandsagas.com" discovered that there is a close geographic proximity of origin, at least for the domain sites. "vinlandsite.com" is registered with the server 'syspac' (Systems Solutions. Llc.) of Phoenix, AZ, while "vinlandsagas.com" domain is with 'DomainsbyProxy' of Scottsdale, AZ, both within the environs of the Greater Phoenix, Arizona metropolis. "vinlandsite.com" is owned, written, and sponsored by Frederick N. Brown who also is director of the small Arizona corporation founded for research purposes, "Voyage of Wave Cleaver, Inc."
Further investigation of "vinlandsagas.com" finds that a website search comes up with an advertising page listing numerous businesses mostly with names starting with the word "Viking---" with varied suffixes for all types of businesses, none, apparently with historical basis. Among other peculiarities is that the word "Viking" has little bearing in these modern times to anything resembling the word or words "vinland sagas". Both Viking and Vinland are commonly utilized in the United States for business recognition, but the word or words "Vinland sagas" refers to a particular body of literature originating in the Nation of Iceland and said body of literature is, or ought to be, referred to solely towards that body of literature and/or the Nation of Iceland where it is considered a National Treasure. It is my belief that the proprietors of "vinlandsagas.com" err in using this title as an advertising attraction. "Vinlandsite" in this name is a dual reference to a valid archeological site under study and also its website location.
Delving even further I found that the domain register/server "DomainsbyProxy.com" is, and has been found to be, a front organization whose sole purpose is to conceal the actual proprietors of websites who desire for one reason or another to remain anonymous. Therefore, the true proprietor of "vinlandsagas.com" may or may not be based in Arizona but at any place worldwide, either Arizona or at distant climes.
A case, D2003-0230, named "Administrative Panel Decision", Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG (Stuttgart, Germany, complainant) vs. Domains by Proxy, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona filed with WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center on March 24, 2003 and assigned for arbitration to Tony Willoughby. It was discovered early on in the proceedings that the respondent (Domains --etc.) was not the true proprietor of the website. It required litigation at expense by Porsche AG to discover that the true proprietor of the website ("PorscheDesign.com") was not in Arizona but another individual located in Quebec, Canada who had contracted with Domains by Proxy, Inc. It then became obvious that some degree of deceit was involved and Willoughby so noted:
"On October 31, 2002, the First Respondent (Domains---) registered the Domain Name with the Registrar. The First Respondent, a sister company of the registrar, as its name suggests, is simply a 'front' for its clients, its raison d'etre being to preserve the anonymity of its clients."
Well, as it applies to this website "vinlandsite.com", it appears that someone unknown is using a name similar to this one for some purpose in no way I can presently find connected to serious historical research, Viking history, or the body of literature indicated by the name. At some level, if only by apparent anonymity of the proprietor(s), some deceit is involved. So far as I can detect, there has been no conflict or interruption in accurate transmission of "vinlandsite.com" in the World Wide Web. It may be that this similar name is just another of those whose purpose is to attract clients by accidental misspelling of momentary confusion as the words Vinland Sagas do appear with some frequency in "vinlandsite.com".
In this view, I am flattered and consider that if this is the case, then the error by any confused computer operator falling into the trap is as likely to be referred to this website as the other - so no real harm is done thereby.
However, it is possible, that at some time the confusion might become more so and possibly an effort to actually misconstrue this website as the other. At his time, I take pride that this website < vinlandsite.com > has been maintained in a reasonably professional manner with no advertising or extraneous material to interfere with our purposes. However, at the end of this year the financial arrangements for maintaining the website will change with the retirement from his regular profession of the writer. It may come about that some advertising will become essential to a longer term presence on the Internet.
I apologize for this necessary digression from theme of the search and provenance of Leif Erickson's Vinland.
Frederick N. Brown
I cannot refrain from commenting on a discovery that came about while researching this issue. I note that a descriptive paragraph on the web describing "vinlandsite.com" has opinions expressed by its author whose name and base I do not know. First the writer describes me as a "white" and "amateur historian" and in both these he/she is correct. But I do wonder at how it was discovered that I am truly "white" and also as to why this should matter. The comment goes on to say that the subject and/or author (me) is "revisionist". Pardon me! This research is in no way revisionist in any sense. It is purely and simply a search for truth for whatever it was that really happened in years gone by. The website and my aim is to present only those items which can plausibly be seen as fact. I do intend to revise errors or distortions in history, but this in no way is intended to "revise" history, only to rediscover and renew it with new findings which present opportunities for new outlooks - and a rediscovered truth.
